THE SABAH (MALAYSIAN BORNEO) HOMESTAY PROGRAMME

The homestay Program in Sabah is coordinated and established under the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Environment, Science and Technology.

The Objectives are to streamlined Homestays that are run privately or individually so that they meet the required standards of "Malaysian Homestay" program, by the Malaysian Cultural, Arts and Tourism.

Homestays gives the opportunity for tourist to experience the unique and rich Malaysian Culture by staying with a local Malaysian host family. The host family must be part of a collective of other families who work together in an organized way, and to promote cultural activities for tourist to experience. This group of host families is called a Homestay Program. All Homestays Program must follow the National Homestay Guidelines and be registered and certified under the Federal Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism.

Hosts of the Sabah Homestays have undergone the required training on the management of homestays so that both them as host and visiting tourist will have an enjoyable guest and host relationship during their stay with host families.

"Homestays" offers a distinctive style of living with emphasis as a warm and friendly hospitality within private homes.

Sabah being the 13 States of Malaysia offers a variety and unique cultural experiences. Sabah is home to more that 33 ethnic groups living in different parts of Sabah. Each district will be offering their own unique culture, beliefs and way of life. Hence visitors would be experiencing a different lifestyle in each of the Homestays that they stay.

For example in the Long Pasia Homestay, the ethnic group there are the Lundayehs while in Kinabatangan, will be the Orang Sunger or the river people. In Tambunan, will be KadazanDusun People and in the North, Kudat are will be the Rungus community, each having their own culture and traditions.

Activities are as varied as the culture themselves. From riding a buffalo to swimming in the river, to mountain climbing, jungle trekking, cultural dances, wildlife watching to padi planting, visiting historical and archeological sites whom the local people know very well. Or just listening to the elders reciting about the stories of the "head hunting days in Borneo".

In order to enjoy the Homestays in Sabah, visitors would be advise and brief on the "Do's and Don'ts of the local people before being send to their host families. Respecting the culture, beliefs and customs of others have been the ways of life of the Sabah Malaysian people as they have lived that way in a multi -cultural society like Malaysia.

Homestay is where you get to stay with a selected family from a different background and culture as your foster family for duration of time. During the period, you will get to learn their way of life especially the socioeconomic life.
